School of Mathematical Sciences
Updated: 2023-06-19

The School of Mathematical Sciences was founded in 1958 as the Department of Mathematics. It was one of the earliest departments established at TNU. The school adheres to the principles of “education as the foundation, students as the priority, mathematics as the basis, and innovation as the main focus”.

The school currently has a total of 71 faculty members, including 58 full-time teachers. Of them, there are 11 professors and researchers, 20 associate professors, and 45 teachers with doctoral degrees. Teachers with doctoral degrees account for 77.6 percent of the full-time teachers. The school boasts several accolades, including one Joseph Traub prize, one Beijing Natural Science Second Prize, and one Young Scholar Award from the Tianjin Mathematics and Statistics Union Annual Meeting.

The school offers master's degree programs in Mathematics and History of Science and Technology, with Mathematics being a key discipline in Tianjin and a priority for development according to the Ministry of Education.

The school has developed strength in Basic Math, Computational Math, differential equations, combinatorics and graph theory, and has cultivated distinct cross-disciplinary research teams, including the Tianjin University Innovation Team, the Tianjin Normal University Integrated Innovation Research Team, and the Tianjin Normal University Outstanding Young Innovative Team.

The school has two departments with three undergraduate majors: Mathematics and Applied Mathematics (Education), Information and Computing Science, and Data Calculation and Application. It also has three research institutes: the High-Performance Computing Center, the Institute of Scientific History, and the Institute of Mathematics Education and Mathematics Olympiad.

The school has excellent teaching conditions. Recently, nearly 20 million yuan was invested in upgrading and renovating the school’s first-class facilities, which provide strong support for students in their studies, especially in data modeling and high-performance computing.

The school prioritizes teaching quality and has excelled in teaching research and methods. Its undergraduates have consistently scored among the top in subject competitions and its postgraduate entrance rate consistently ranks highly.

In recent years, many students have been recommended to further their studies at prestigious universities and research institutions such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Peking University, the University of Science and Technology of China, and Beijing Normal University, while others have gone to study at well-known foreign universities like the University of Manchester, Birmingham University, and the University of Queensland. Graduates are widely distributed in fields such as education, finance, and software development.

The school will continue to center on teaching and scientific research, with the goal of comprehensively improving its quality of education and research level. With the spirit of broad learning, innovation, and progress, it will construct and develop a mathematics and science school with distinctive features.
