The predecessor of the School of Chemistry at Tianjin Normal University was the Department of Chemistry, which was established by the original Tianjin Normal College in 1958. In June 1998, the Department of Chemistry, the Department of Biology, and the Experimental Center of Tianjin Normal University merged to form the School of Chemistry and Life Sciences. In 1999, Tianjin Education College and Tianjin Higher Normal School merged into Tianjin Normal University, and their chemistry and biology teaching staff were integrated into the School of Chemistry and Life Sciences. In March 2010, TNU abolished the School of Chemistry and Life Sciences and established the School of Chemistry and the School of Life Sciences respectively.

The School of Chemistry currently has 1,230 undergraduate students and 247 graduate students.

The school offers two undergraduate programs: Chemistry (Teacher Education) and Biochemistry. Chemistry (Teacher Education) is a branded program in Tianjin, while Biochemistry is a distinctive program of TNU.

The Chemistry has been included on the list of doctoral degree authorization points that were added in 2020 and enrolls doctoral students in Nano-porous Materials, Supramolecular Chemistry, Photoelectrochemical, and Nano-energy Materials and Devices. The school also grants master's degrees in Chemistry, with four academic research programs available: Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, and Analytical Chemistry. It also grants master's degrees in Materials and Chemical Engineering, with a professional master's program available in Chemical Engineering.

The school’s Chemistry is a key discipline in Tianjin, and since January 2013 it has been listed among the top 1 percent of the ESI international discipline rankings for ten consecutive years. The school also boasts the Tianjin Key Laboratory of Functional Molecular Structure and Performance. Furthermore, its Chemistry Experiment Center has become a demonstration center for experimental teaching in Tianjin's colleges and universities.

The school has 77 full-time teachers, among whom 24 are senior professors and 24 are associate senior professors, 98.7 percent of whom hold a doctoral degree.

The college has excellent teaching and research facilities, with a floor area of 12,000 square meters and an instrument and equipment value of over 100 million yuan. It has a range of instruments, including a Field Emission Transmission Electron Microscope, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope, X-Ray Photoelectron Spectrometer, X-Ray Powder Diffractometer, X-Ray Single Crystal Diffractometer, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer, Magnetic Measurement System, Comprehensive Physical Property Measurement System, Differential Scanning Calorimeter, Thermogravimetric Analyzer, Infrared Spectrometer, Liquid Chromatography, Gas Chromatography, Fluorescence Spectrometer, Circular Dichroism Spectrometer, UV Spectrophotometer, and an Electrochemical Workstation.

In recent years, the faculty of the school has undertaken over 70 research projects, obtained nearly 300 invention patents, and won First, Second, and Third Prizes of Natural Science of Tianjin, the 5th China Overseas Chinese (Innovation Achievement) Contribution Award, as well as the Tianjin Youth Science and Technology Award. It has also established multiple off-campus practice bases and maintained long-term and stable cooperation with numerous domestic and foreign institutions, creating favorable conditions for student training.
