Tagore and 20th-Century Chinese Literature (May 2025), a research outcome presided over by Professor Li Yuejin from the School of Literature at Tianjin Normal University (TNU) under the National Social Science Fund Project, has been published by Peking University Press.

About the Book

Tagore's intellectual and literary legacy constitutes a significant component of global spiritual culture. This work examines Tagore's multifaceted influence on 20th-century Chinese literature within a cross-cultural framework. It investigates the channels, scope, and depth of this impact, the cultural dynamics of conflict and integration it engendered, its distinctive characteristics, and the individualized reception of Tagore by Chinese writers. Through the lens of literary "influence-reception," the book illuminates the encounter, interaction, and fusion of the ancient Chinese and Indian civilizations in the modern era. It further contemplates how Chinese literature and culture, during periods of transformation, can assimilate foreign elements to enrich themselves and rejuvenate ancient traditions. By situating the "Tagore-Chinese literature relationship" within the broader contexts of the Chinese and Indian cultural systems, the history of Sino-Indian cultural exchange, and 20th-century global civilization, the study deciphers the essence of the "Tagore phenomenon." This exploration of Tagore's impact represents a Sino-Indian cultural dialogue, marked by both resonance and dynamism. It enhances cultural self-awareness through literary exchange and promotes contemporary Sino-Indian cultural engagement.
